More Recipes You'll Love
Guacamole is the crowd-pleasing classic built on ripe avocado, sweet onion, garlic, and a whole cup of fresh cilantro. Jalapeño and lemon juice keep it bright and lively, while chopped plum tomatoes folded in at the last minute add juicy bursts. Scoop it with chips, spoon it over shredded pork, or eat it straight from the bowl.
Pro Tips
- Add the tomatoes just before serving. They release water as they sit and turn the guacamole soupy if they go in too early.
- Mince the jalapeño fine and adjust the amount to your heat preference. Serrano peppers bring a sharper, greener heat if you want more fire.
- Use lemon juice rather than the traditional lime if following this recipe exactly — it keeps the avocado green and gives a slightly sweeter, rounder tang.
- Press plastic wrap directly onto the surface when storing. Air is what turns guacamole brown; contact-wrap keeps it green overnight.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I keep guacamole from turning brown?
Lemon juice slows the browning, and plastic wrap pressed right onto the surface blocks the air. Smooth the top before wrapping for the best seal.
How long does guacamole keep?
One to two days in the refrigerator with proper covering. It is always best the day it is made — the cilantro and lemon are at their brightest then.
What can I serve this guacamole with?
The recipe loves it with dipping sliders, over scrambled eggs, as a salad dressing, or over shredded pork or beef. Basically anything savory.
