Chipotle tomato sauce is a slow-cooker smoky, spicy sauce with layers of flavor — crushed and fire-kissed tomatoes, sweet onion, plenty of garlic, and chipotle peppers in adobo for that distinctive smoky heat. Eight hours on low and it comes out rich, deep, and utterly unlike anything in a jar. Spoon it over anything that needs waking up.
Pro Tips
- Mince the chipotle peppers finely so their smoky heat distributes evenly through the sauce rather than landing in fiery pockets.
- Start with 2 chipotles and add more to taste — the heat varies by brand, and you can always increase it but never take it back.
- Stir the sauce well before serving; slow cooking concentrates the flavors and the tomatoes can settle at the bottom.
- Fresh cilantro stirred in at the end brightens the deep, slow-cooked flavors and keeps the sauce tasting lively.
Frequently Asked Questions
How spicy is this sauce?
Medium, with a smoky rather than sharp heat. Reduce the chipotle peppers for a milder sauce, or add an extra one for real fire.
How long does it keep?
Up to 5 days in the fridge, or 3 months frozen. The flavors deepen beautifully over time, so it's an excellent make-ahead sauce.
What can I use it on?
Chicken, fish, roasted vegetables, or as a sauce for zucchini noodles. It also makes a fantastic braising liquid for pork.
Is this sauce Paleo?
Yes — tomatoes, onion, garlic, chipotle peppers, and spices. Check that your chipotles in adobo have no additives if you keep things strict.
