BEEF & BROCCOLI

Serves 4-6

We LOVED to order Chinese takeout until we found out that there is a lot of wheat in the soy sauce. How silly is it to have wheat in your soy sauce? Rather than give up on eating Chinese food, we started making our own.

This beef and broccoli is a little bit sweet, just the right amount of salty, and is a very tasty version of one of our old favorites. Make it with our Fried Cauli Rice with Shrimp for the perfect “takeout” meal at home.

INGREDIENTS

• 1 lb sirloin steak, sliced into strips ½-inch by½-inch by 2-inch
• 2 Tbsp olive oil or lard
• 1 medium onion, sliced
• 2 cloves of garlic, minced
• 1 lb broccoli, chopped into 2- to 3-inch pieces
• ¼ C coconut aminos (or wheat-free tamari)
• 2 tsp sesame oil
• 1 tsp salt
• 1/8 tsp pepper
• 1/8 tsp red pepper flakes

INSTRUCTIONS AND HOW KIDS CAN HELP

1. Heat large frying pan or wok over medium-high heat; if meat is lean, consider adding 1 Tbsp of oil to pan.
2. Sear beef for about 2 minutes on each side, then remove from pan and set aside.
3. Turn heat down to medium and add oil in wok to warm.
4. Add onions to wok, cooking and stirring with little hands until onions start to soften, about 5 minutes.
5. Add garlic and cooked meat to wok, allow to cook together for 3-4 minutes.
6. Add broccoli, aminos, sesame oil, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes to pan.
7. Stir to combine, reduce heat to low and simmer for 30 minutes, covered.
